Limitless opportunities await those who are prepared to head out into the oceans by boat or traditional dhow... from game fishing for a myriad of year round and seasonal catches, to island-hopping and idyllic picnics on sandy beaches, there are so many things to do without actually getting your feet wet!
Sport and Game Fishing
Vilanculos and the Bazaruto Archipelago is the area in southern Mozambique where the warm Mozambican current comes in closest to shore. The Bazaruto Archipelago is blessed with a myriad of underwater structures that hold large amounts of baitfish, which in turn attract an immense variety of migrating pelagic fish that cruise past the area throughout the year making fishing for giant king fish, king mackerel, yellow fin tuna and barracuda possible all year round- this is game fishing at its best! Fly fishing and shore fishing off the islands also make for exciting sport fishing alternatives.
Island-Hopping
Full day and half day trips are available to explore any of the amazing tropical islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago which lie within a boats ride from Vila Do Paraiso. Each island has its own distinct landscape and history, so try and experience them all during your visit.
Traditional Dhow Excursions
A dhow is a traditional Arab vessel that was introduced around this coastline as early as the 11th century. Muslim and Persian traders were the first outsiders to arrive to the area by sea and traded pearls and ambergris. The dhow boats are used by the locals for fishing purposes and, of course, to explore the tranquil waters beneath.
Setting off early in the morning, you will be whisked away to any of the beautiful islands , with pointed tips jutting out from the water and rugged sails pulled taut in the breeze, the sense of the amazing history in this place overwhelms. Discover the seabed at your leisure off the side of your dhow and experience the ocean as never before
Shell Collecting
Shell collecting is highly fruitful for all aspiring shell collectors on all the islands, where a large variety of shells can be found due to the abundance of coral reefs found offshore. A walk along the beach just in front of Vila do Paraiso can also reward the shell-seeker with a surprising haul.
Island Braai/Picnic
The islands are wonderful places to go and spend an exciting day out on one of our ski –boats, the catamaran, or by dhow, where a picnic or braai can be set up on the island of your choice whilst you work up a hunger fishing or snorkeling in the wonderful tropical waters. End off the day with a casual stroll collecting shells or just enjoy a drink on a deck chair on your own unpopulated beach.
Birdwatching
Approximately 164 different birds have been identified and confirmed on the islands in habitats varying from the coastal dunes, open grasslands and fresh water lakes to savannah and acacia woodlands. A treat is to see the flocks of flamingos on the island inland lakes.
