  • Who is King of the Mackerel?

Recently the Shareholders of Vila Do Paraiso descended on the resort for their AGM. Flown in comfort by HAC, and armed with some very nice plastic cutlery (brought along for an unknown purpose), they gathered in the beach bar for a delicious seafood lunch and then only could the officiation begin.

After a gruelling meeting, the relieved party relaxed in the company of some icy 2M's and planned a very important fishing weekend.

Early the next morning we all departed on the snazzy "Drop Ur Rods" with Ben, our erstwhile and able Skipper and his 1st Officer, Nelson. Armed to the teeth with all number of rods and lures and bait types, we headed out to the islands amidst a fresh breeze and some light chop, which our boat skimmed over with nary a jolt for the fishermen, who were so pleased with the conditions we managed to crack open a beer or two.

On reaching our choen spot on the other side of Bazaruto Island, we dropped lines and commenced the strenuous job of sipping on beer and waiting for the buzz of the reels...and we didn't wait long at all!

Ben had steered us into a school of King Mackerel and we all (almost) took turns to haul in  fantastic specimens of the breed -some bringing them in sideways, but nevertheless, the first 6 fishermen were successful at their first hit. The Mackerel were interspersed by a Jobfish and a Bonita and James Halsted caught the whopper of the day.

Only 2 (supposed professional fishermen) failed to land fish, even after 1 or two hits. However, after much cossetting and going here and there by Ben, even they managed to pull in a couple. All in all, a  very successful day as we stopped for a lovely surf and turf braai on the sand.... and more beer, with the odd Captain thrown in for good measure (and health).

This first trip was to set the tone for the rest of the weekend, with numerous Kingfish caught and released in the chop off Margaruque the following day and a very exciting session amidst thousands of birds as the Bonita were on the rampage all around us on our last outing.

The fishing continues to be fantastic as always, and could it even have improved with the absence of the trawlers due to the SA NAvy patrolling nearby for the last couple of months? If it gets any better than this, we may have to enlarge the already substantial hold in the new boat!

Here's to stiff lines for everyone in the upcoming months and thanks to Ben for, as always, finding the action for us!

Drop your jaw at the sight of our newly acquired fishing vessel -aptly named "Drop UR Rods"!

This Supercat beauty was sailed up from East London in October 2011 and now forms the flagship of Vila Do Paraiso's fishing fleet. Some more info for the tecchies...

The Supercat 38 Sport displacement power cat offers all the benefits of slim hull technology, the shape being the product of optimized function and practical compromise. Slim hulled power cats perform well in all conditions – comparatively speaking. The slim hulls enable comparatively high speeds with relatively low power, extraordinary comfort, stability and when compared with other boat configurations, longer range is possible for the same displacement. Fuel consumption is approximately ¼ that of a planning cat at 10 knots and approximately ½ at 20 knots. The Supercat 38 Sport also has a hull designed for beaching on sandy beaches, when the waves are relatively small.

    What does this mean???

2x100HP, 4 stroke Yamaha engines to get you out an about up to 500 Nautical Miles on 2x275litre tanks.

-fish further afield and get there in less time with less fuel!!

Much more space and capacity for 8 people fishing or 12 passengers!

Drop UR Rods delivered on its maiden fishing outing at Vila Do Paraiso!!

This sailfish was just one of a great clutch of fish caught on its inaugural fishing expedition on arrival in the Vilanculos waters and the Bazaruto Archipelago in October this year.

The catch was augmented by a fantastic Dorado and Giant Kingfish, as well as numerous edibles.

A Black Marlin was caught just a few weeks ago by Charles and Rob Halsted -what a ripper!!

Using only light tackle, they fought the 250+kg marlin for over 5 hours before it finally conceded defeat. The exhausted fishermen managed to tag and release the beautiful ocean speedster successfully, so all ended happily!

They hooked into it whilst quietly trolling for sailfish whilst on the way home -says something for the age old "last cast" doesn't it?

    Cheers
